Before we begin, our experts inspect the vessel’s condition, ensuring that all draft marks are visible and properly recorded. We also verify the ballast, fuel, and freshwater quantities that may affect the vessel’s displacement.

Draft Readings (Before Loading/Discharge)

Our surveyors take precise draft readings from the vessel’s forward, midship, and aft sections on both port and starboard sides. These measurements help determine the ship’s displacement before cargo operations begin.

Draft Survey Procedure

At VALENCIA Marine Services, we follow a precise and internationally recognized draft survey procedure to determine the exact weight of cargo loaded or discharged from a vessel. Our professional surveyors ensure accuracy and reliability in every step, minimizing discrepancies and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Water Density Measurement

We collect water samples from the port area and measure the density using a hydrometer. Since water density affects displacement calculations, this step ensures the most accurate weight determination.

Initial Displacement Calculation

Using the ship’s hydrostatic tables, we calculate the vessel’s displacement before cargo handling. We apply necessary corrections for water density, trim, and list to maintain accuracy.

Final Draft Readings (After Loading/Discharge)

Once loading or unloading is complete, we repeat the draft measurement process. This allows us to determine the vessel’s new displacement.

Final Displacement Calculation & Cargo Weight Determination

By subtracting the initial displacement from the final displacement, we determine the exact weight of the cargo handled. Adjustments are made for ballast, fuel consumption, and any other relevant factors.

Survey Report & Certification

We compile all measurements, calculations, and adjustments into a detailed Draft Survey Report. This document serves as an official record of cargo weight and is essential for shipping documentation and dispute resolution.
